In its current issue, German consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST examined the ingredients of 20 luxury creams. Despite high prices of up to €206 for 50 ml, most of the products contained inferior raw materials such as artificial paraffins, petroleum products and silicones. In eight products, polycyclic musk compounds – which may accumulate in the body and are therefore to be classified as potentially unsafe – were even identified. Formaldehyde/formaldehyde donators were also found in individual products. These substances are suspected of causing cancer and can irritate the mucous membranes and cause allergies even in small amounts.
So "no trace of luxury" was the conclusion ÖKO-TEST came to in issue 05/2009, classifying more than half of the fine-sounding brands it tested as "unsatisfactory".
